BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The City of Boston unveiled its new Late Night Food Truck Program at a press conference Monday morning in City Hall Plaza.

The program will allow select food trucks to operate through the night until 3 a.m. on certain days every week.

In a statement released earlier this month, Mayor Michelle Wu shared her excitement in launching this program.

“My very first efforts in city government working under Mayor Menino focused on improving the restaurant permitting process and launching food trucks in Boston,” Mayor Wu said. “Fifteen years later, I’m excited to continue creating opportunities for our food businesses and to make our city vibrant, welcoming, and fun.”

Director of Nightlife Economy Corean Reynolds expressed the importance of strengthening Boston’s food industry.

“We can provide diversity and stability to an industry in this city that has been built over 15 years and has seen extreme impacts due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Reynolds said.

Some of these trucks will be placed at music venues and other nightlife spots for those out and about late into the evening, but Reynolds also mentioned how some trucks will be placed at locations where third shift workers like nurses, doctors, police officers, and construction workers can benefit.

The participating food trucks were chosen via a lottery on June 6. One of those chosen venders was Murl’s Kitchen, whose Director of Operations Shantae Romain shared how necessary a program like this was for smaller restaurants.

“This gives businesses who have amazing foods and restaurants the opportunity to expand and do late night food trucks throughout the city of Boston, which is a huge win for small businesses and restaurants,” she said.

Along with Murl’s Kitchen, fellow food venders Extreme Flavor and Augusta’s Chicken on the Road were also at the event.
