NightSide with Dan Rea - Rundown for 1/23/18

Is PC Culture Making Schools Unsafe?  Early this morning, another tragic school shooting took place, this time in a Kentucky high school.  The alleged shooter killed two students and injured seventeen others.  This marks the second school shooting in as many days, and yet there has been very little coverage of either incident.  Meanwhile, a civil rights group in Boston is concerned that Boston School Police are overusing the word “gang” in their incident reports, which they claim is helping ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) identify students who are here illegally.  Do you think police officers working in schools should be worried about using the wrong terminology in their incident reports?  Does the word “gang” mean something different for high school students than for ICE?  Call in and join the conversation!

James Patterson on Aaron Hernandez!  Author James Patterson talks with Dan and the rest of NightSide Nation about his new book “All-American Murder: The Rise and Fall of Aaron Hernandez”.  Patterson, who usually writes murder-mystery novels, will discuss Hernandez’s background, and the chain of unbelievable and still somewhat surreal events that ultimately ended in Hernandez’s suicide.  Tune in to hear about the research and interviews Patterson conducted while writing his true-crime thriller, then call in with your comments or questions and be a part of the show!

Please Stand!  That was the simple message that AMVETS, a volunteer-led organization that was formed by World War II veterans, wanted to display in the program for the upcoming Super Bowl.  But the NFL has rejected the one page ad that the group submitted, saying that the statement “Please Stand” was too political.  Joe Chenelly, Executive Director of AMVETS, checks in with Dan to explain what happened and why the group felt the message was appropriate and important.  Do you think the NFL was right to reject the ad?  Should they allow all ads, regardless of political content?  Call in and add your voice to the mix!
