Nightside with Dan Rea - Rundown for March 11, 2021

The Hidden Cost of COVID. As the COVID death toll numbers drop daily, it’s the unintended consequences of this pandemic that are coming into the light. While a large portion of lucky citizens managed to escape the virus, they did not manage to escape other ailments that came as a result of the pandemic. Alcohol consumption, drug overdoses, and mental health illnesses have been at an all-time high over the past year. Many doctors are now left dealing with patients who have been “broken” by the pandemic. Brigham and Women’s Hospital critical-care physician Dr. Daniela Lamas joins Dan to talk about her latest Washington Post article, “We focused on COVID. Now our other patients are suffering.”

Bye "Mom" and "Dad"! A private school in New York says it’s time to use more inclusive language and wants students to stop using such terms as "Mom" and "Dad." The Grace Church School in Noho has issued a 12-page guide to students and staff outlining their new guidelines in which an “inclusionary glossary” is included. Would you send your children to this school? Is this new “glossary” necessary?

Crisis at the Border. The White House coordinator for the Southern Border, Amb. Roberta Jackson, seemed to send a mixed message yesterday during a press conference when she said in Spanish "our border is not closed" following up in English "our border is not open." The Biden Administration appears to be reluctant to call the stream of illegal immigrants at the southern border a crisis. What would you call it? Former Acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan joins Dan to discuss.
