Nightside with Dan Rea - Rundown for April 14, 2021

The Wakefield Warrior. The town of Wakefield, Massachusetts is debating the past and future of its high school mascot. The school’s Native American Warrior logo, a stern-faced drawing of an Indigenous person wearing a headdress, is described as a source of pride by some and an embarrassment by others. Wakefield's School Committee voted the logo out in March but not before the Town Council had approved a citizen's petition to put a ballot question before the residents to keep the Native American imagery. Should the Warrior go?

The Charges Are In. Ex-Brooklyn Center, MN police officer Kim Potter has been charged with second-degree manslaughter in the Daunte Wright case. Potter is a 26-year veteran who shot and killed Wright after pulling a gun instead of a taser. Both Potter as well as the Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon resigned after the incident. Is second-degree manslaughter the appropriate charge?

No More Police? After the “accidental” death of Minnesota man Daunte Wright, Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib took to Twitter to express her distaste by saying, “No more policing, incarceration, and militarization. It can't be reformed.” When asked, the Biden Administration said they do not share Tlaib’s viewpoint. Is Tlaib right, can policing not be reformed? What type of reform do you think could be beneficial?
