NightSide with Dan Rea - Rundown for August 13, 2021

Paulie's Push. In memory of his fellow flight attendants and crew members killed in the September 11th attacks, former United Airlines flight attendant Paul Veneto is pushing an airline beverage cart from Boston Logan Airport to Ground Zero, NYC. Veneto wanted to do something special on the 20th anniversary of the attack to pay tribute to the heroism of the flight attendants after "what we’ve all been through," with the Coronavirus pandemic and political tensions of the last year-and-a-half. Paulie joins Dan to talk about that day and what this walk means for him and the 9/11 families left behind.

Brookline Says No More Walk and Talk Policing. The town of Brookline is ending its police Walk and Talk program in which officers spend time at Brookline Housing Authority properties chatting with residents or playing with neighborhood children in an effort to become part of the community. Critics of the program say it can lead to over-policing of low-income residents and people of color while proponents argue Walk and Talk is exactly the kind of community-based policing most towns are trying to emulate since it makes officers more approachable to the residents and vice versa. Brookline Select Board Member Bernard Greene joins Dan to discuss the issue.

Biden's Saigon. Afghanistan is only days away from being completely overrun by the Taliban while the Biden Administration makes speeches about negotiating a political settlement with mad men who don't care about world opinion. While the Taliban moves toward Kabul, the U.S. is sending three thousand troops to the embassy in an attempt to get all Americans out alive. Many see the rush to airlift diplomatic personnel as reminiscent of the fall of Vietnam. Will Kabul be President Biden's Saigon?
