NightSide with Dan Rea - Rundown for August 18, 2021

Opening the Border for Afghans. Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker is pledging to help refugees fleeing Afghanistan now under Taliban control. The Governor tweeted “Massachusetts is ready to assist Afghan refugees seeking safety and peace in America.” Meanwhile U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin has authorized the use of Fort Bliss in Texas and Fort McCoy in Wisconsin to house Special Immigrant Visa applicants, their families, “and other at-risk individuals.” Is this the right thing to do?

Update from Afghanistan. The White House says the President is being briefed by the Pentagon on conditions in Afghanistan after U.S. personnel fired shots around the airport in Kabul to control the thousands thick crowd desperate to get through the gates and hoping for a possible ticket out of harm's way. Americans have been told in an-email that they need to get to the airport but that the U.S. cannot help get them there. Should we be giving more help to U.S. citizens stuck in Afghanistan?

Fauci and Civil Liberties. Dr. Anthony Fauci says civil liberties are getting in the way of fighting the pandemic. He wants Americans to “put aside” concerns and personal liberties and recognize the common enemy of COVID-19. Are you comfortable with suspending your Constitution guaranteed freedoms? If we suspend them now, will they ever be re-instated?
