Aaron Spencer, an Arkansas father facing second-degree murder charges, has announced his candidacy for Lonoke County sheriff. Spencer, 37, allegedly shot and killed Michael Fosler, 67, on October 8, 2024, after finding Fosler with his 14-year-old daughter in a vehicle. Fosler, who was out on bond at the time, faced numerous charges, including sexual assault and internet stalking of a child, related to Spencer’s daughter.

Spencer, a former 82nd Airborne Division veteran, claims he acted in defense of his daughter after Fosler allegedly lunged at him. In a campaign video posted on Facebook, Spencer described himself as "the father who acted to protect his daughter when the system failed" and emphasized his commitment to restoring trust and safety in the community. He stated, "It's about every parent, every neighbor, every family who deserves to feel safe in their homes."

The case has sparked national attention and debate, with a Change.org petition titled "Absolve Aaron David Spencer of Charges Stemming From Saving his Daughter's Life" gathering over 361,000 signatures. Spencer's campaign comes as he prepares for a pre-trial hearing on December 17, ahead of his trial set for January 26, 2026.

Lonoke County Sheriff Jeff Staley, who has served since 2013, is seeking re-election and has not commented on Spencer's case due to the pending trial. Staley emphasized his focus on combating drug traffickers, sexual predators, and thieves in the community.

The outcome of Spencer's trial may hinge on whether jurors believe his use of deadly force was justified to protect his daughter, a point that legal experts suggest could be a strong defense.
