WILMINGTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — The MBTA opened a new train station in North Wilmington on Monday.
After the old stop was demolished this past spring, the new Haverhill Commuter Rail Line station has been updated with accessibility features and modern technology.
These upgrades include ramps for accessible boarding onto the platform, a canopy overhead to block the elements, electronic schedule boards and lamp posts all around.
Jordan is a local who said that this new station is a massive upgrade to the old one, which she felt barely qualified as a legitimate station.
“You actually can differentiate that there is a train station here now, because before you honestly didn’t see any of the shelter or anything like that from the road,” Jordan said.
She also mentioned how she believes this improved station means great things for the town as a whole.
“Wilmington is definitely, since we moved here, up and coming, and this is another added element,” Jordan said.

Another major change is that the access point to the station has been moved away from the road to the sidewalk that connects to an accessible parking lot. The old location caused the train to block the street, making it difficult for emergency vehicles to get through.
Another local highlighted this relocation as a smart move.
“This has always been a problem area with the police and ambulances trying to get by,” he said. “Now the way things are going, it sounds like they got the problem solved.”
Gino from Haverhill is the owner of Gino's Guitar Gallery right near the station, and he said that he will most likely take advantage of the new station, although he has some reservations about potential construction that will crop up in the area because of it.
“I know this goes right into North Station, so I mean it would be easier to park here and head right into town,” Gino said. “Well, I’m worried about all the years of construction, but at the same time, yeah I know it would be good for business.”
