PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A British-based cereal has been going viral on social media, and Massachusetts is getting in on the trend.

Several stores around the state have seen a shortage in Weetabix, a whole-grain biscuit cereal produced in the United Kingdom.

The shortages come after a wave of videos had taken TikTok by storm, featuring different ways to use the high-fiber cereal using ingredients like fruit and chocolate.

Plymouth's British Imports owner Unity MacLean has been selling imported goods from the U.K. out of her store for around four decades. She said that although it’s a simple recipe, there are plenty of ways to customize it.

“It’s a very straightforward cereal. No sugar, no salt, no added anything. It’s just straightforward wheat,” said MacLean. “All you’ve got to do is melt a bit of chocolate and pour it over, and it’s better for you than ice cream.”

As tariff and diplomacy issues continue, the price of the British cereal has been going up fast. MacLean said it’s become quite a prized breakfast commodity.

“People have been eating Weetabix for years,” said MacLean. “I thought about it, and I thought, there’s not really any similar cereal [in the U.S.].”
