BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey issued a warning Wednesday afternoon about "dangerous rip currents" off the coast of Massachusetts as Hurricane Erin churns over the Atlantic.
"I want to urge everyone on our coasts to stay safe and alert as we expect to experience some effects of the storm passing offshore," Healey said. "Rip currents and high surfs are a serious threat to swimmers. Please be careful while the storm passes through our region and keep an eye out for neighbors who might need assistance."
The National Weather Service (NWS) said conditions are "life-threatening" for swimmers and surfers, and waters are expected to be hazardous for small crafts.
A High Surf Advisory is in effect for parts of the state. A Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect for some areas, including the South Coast, Cape and Islands. A Gale Warning is in effect from 8 a.m. Thursday until Friday afternoon.
Multiple DCR beaches have been closed to swimming. State officials are also "urging shore-based anglers to be vigilant of high surf conditions that can make areas unsafe for fishing."
