BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Tropical Storm Elsa is set to pass through New England Thursday evening into Friday morning and most of Massachusetts is expected to see downpours.
"We do have a flash flood watch in effect for pretty much everybody except for Cape Cod and the Islands," National Weather Service meteorologist Alan Dunham said. "You're going to see wind gusts on the windier side up to 50 miles per hour, maybe a little stronger at times."
The storm is expected to taper out Friday afternoon or evening.
Elsa made landfall in Florida Wednesday morning. It turned deadly, claiming one life after heavy winds caused a tree to fall onto a pair of cars in Jacksonville.
Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry said during a news conference Wednesday that Elsa’s impact is a reminder that weather is unpredictable.
“We’re just outside of the July 4th holiday, we’ve had our first storm and, unfortunately, we’ve had a fatality,” Curry said.
As the storm continues to make its way up the East Coast toward New England, Eversource crews are preparing for potential power outages.
They are encouraging people to make sure they have everything they need in the case of a blackout.
Eversource recommends running through their storm safety checklist, which includes preparing a storm kit with supplies such as water, food, batteries, flashlights and a first aid kit.
The power provider also recommends unplugging sensitive equipment if people do not have surge protectors and checking for damage after the storm.
Eversource says people should never approach or touch a downed wire and should report it as soon as possible. They also encourage people to report outages right away so crews can restore power sooner rather than later.
