BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories have been issued for a storm that could make life tough for drivers on Friday.

Update: 2:30 p.m. (per AccuWeather):

There are winter weather advisories later tonight into tomorrow for rain changing to sleet and freezing rain in the Boston area, with some snow well inland.

Rain, drizzle and fog continues tonight with lows hovering around 35-40 degrees. Areas well out and beyond 495 may start getting icy late tonight as temperatures drop to near or below freezing.

Tomorrow, freezing rain and sleet inland may end as a little snow by the afternoon with a coating to an inch in some areas north and west of 495. Near and south of Boston, early rain will change over to freezing rain and sleet by the afternoon as temperatures drop into the 20s.

Untreated surfaces will become icy.

It will be brisk and bitterly cold tomorrow night with clouds. Icy conditions will persist, with lows in the teens. RealFeels temperatures are expected to dip into the single digits.

Saturday will be partly to mostly sunny, but brisk and quite cold, with a high of 23.

Sunday will be mostly sunny and still cold, with a high of 26.

Looking ahead, we’ve got dry and a bit milder weather early next week with temperatures in the low and mid-30s.

The National Weather Service Tweeted a warning to those who plan on participating in the Friday morning commute. Early rain will make it difficult for crews to pre-treat roads before things start to get icy.

The National Weather Service said showers overnight on Thursday will quickly turn to sleet and freezing rain on Friday morning across the state, as temperatures plummet into the 20s.

Storm Warnings will kick in for the northern and north-western portion of the state at 1:00 AM, with advisories in place for the rest of Massachusetts. The timing of the storm is tricky according to the NWS, because road crews can't easily salt the roads as it rains on Thursday night before the hard freeze on Friday morning.

That means roads may rapidly ice up before being treated.

The Service is predicting a tenth of an inch of ice for the city and its surroundings, and untreated roadways will become icy. There will be some snow for Greater Boston and other parts of the state, between a coating and 3 inches by the time storm rolls out.
