BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Boston City Councilor Ricardo Arroyo is getting the ball rolling when it comes to a potential ban on "nips" or miniature alcohol bottles in the city.
Councilor Arroyo filed a hearing order to discuss the ban at Wednesday's Council meeting. Representatives from Boston Public Health Commission and Licensing Board are set attend the meeting and discuss how the ban could benefit public health.
“The data is clear that in cities that have banned the sale of nips there is a significant and positive impact on public health. We should put the wellbeing of our communities first by banning the sale of nips in Boston as well.” Councilor Ricardo Arroyo said in a statement.

Nips have already been banned in the city of Chelsea and Newton and the towns of Falmouth, Wareham and Mashpee.
There are also environmental concerns surrounding nips as the bottles are unable to recycled in Massachusetts due to their miniature size and are non-biodegradable. Arroyo's office said in one instance in Hyde Park, 10,000 nips were collected in less than two minutes.
