SOMERVILLE, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — A new colorful giant LEGO giraffe to honor a local boy who passed away will be greeting guests at LEGO Discovery Center in Assembly Row when it reopens later in the spring.
The new 20-foot giraffe will still be named Gio, after a boy who died six years ago after battling congenital heart disease. Gio's family attended the unveiling ceremony and said Geo would have loved it.
"He just loved giraffes. He was a big fan of colors. His favorite colors were primary colors. He just loved rainbows and everything beautiful about the world," Maya Maggiore, Gio's mom, said.

The giraffe took an entire day to piece together and features 22,000 LEGO DUPLO bricks. The new giraffe was a part of the $12 million renovation project.
LEGO Discovery Center closed for renovation in September and is set to open again this spring.
The renovated LEGO Discovery Center will have a spaceship build and scan, a LEGO Minifigure creator, MINIWORLD, and several adventures for kids to let their imagination and creativity run wild.
