Mansfield P.D. Investigate Crash Involving Student Driver, 80-Year-Old Dies

MANSFIELD, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Mansfield Police are investigating after an 80-year-old suffered a medical emergency and died after a crash in a driving academy vehicle.

On Saturday morning, police responded to a crash on East Street, an access road to Mansfield High School, and discovered 80-year-old John Masciarelli who appeared to have suffered a medical emergency after the crash. Police also found two damaged vehicles, a Toyota Corolla and a Ford Explorer, District Attorney Thomas Quinn said.

Mansfield EMS found Masciarelli in the back passenger seat of a Toyota Corolla and transported him to Good Samaritan Hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said.

A permitted driver was operating the vehicle at the time of the crash with a Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles road test agent in the passenger seat. They were both transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for minor injuries, DA Quinn said.

The driver of the Ford Explorer involved in the crash was transported to Sturdy Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

An investigation is underway.
