BOSTON (WBZNewsRadio) — On Friday, the MSPCA Boston announced a record-breaking number of adoptions in June after setting an ambitious adoption goal for the summer.

This June, 250 dogs were adopted, breaking the record for most dogs placed in a single month in the MSPCA-Angell's more than 150-year history.

In May, the MSPCA had set a goal of placing 2,500 dogs into forever homes by the fall. The goal was set as economic instability and veterinary staffing shortages left too many dogs needing to be adopted with not enough adopters, putting dogs at a higher risk of being euthanized.

“We put out an urgent call for adopters last month, and people have really stepped up,” said Mike Keiley, MSPCA-Angell director of adoption centers and programs. “But it’s going to take more than one incredible month of adoptions to make a significant impact in this crisis.”

The MSPCA is holding more special dog adoption events this summer from July 10 through July 16 at all shelter locations. All large breed dogs aged one or older will have waived adoption fees.
