One Man Is Dead After MBTA Commuter Rail Train Hits Vehicle In Abington

ABINGTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — One man is dead after a vehicle was struck by an MBTA Commuter Rail train in Abington, according to Transit Police.

The crash happened around 4:50 p.m. on Wednesday evening around the area of Railroad Street and Birch Street in Abington.

A preliminary investigation suggests that the vehicle was hit while the grade crossing warning system was deployed, Transit Police said. The driver maneuvered around another vehicle that was stopped at the crossing and made its way around the gate onto the right of way. The vehicle was then struck by an inbound MBTA Commuter Rail Trail on the Plymouth Line.

The man driving the vehicle was pronounced dead. No other injuries were reported, police said.

There were about 12 passengers on board the train at the time of the incident. There were no other passengers in the vehicle.
