LONGMEADOW, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Longmeadow Police are investigating after two children suffered burns from pool chemicals poured onto slides at a local playground.
On Sunday morning, Longmeadow emergency services got reports of two children suffering from burns after playing on Bliss Park Playground. At the same time, officials were called to the playground for a "suspicious substance" that had been poured on three of the playground slides, Longwood Fire Department said.
Longwood and state officials determined that the pump room in the basement of the pool building, where the pool chemicals are stored, was broken into. Someone climbed two fences, tore off a cover to a ventilation shaft, and then entered the pump room through the ventilation shaft, officials said.
The Haz-Mat team determined that the chemical muriatic acid was poured on the slides.

"The pool chemicals had been stored properly in a secured area. A great deal of effort was employed to enter this space. We suspect that the perpetrators may have suffered acid burns to their hands or arms and their clothing may have indications of being degraded from contact with the acid," Longmeadow Fire said.
A special contractor has been hired to clean the playground. Until they determine if the playground is safe to enter, it will remain closed.
"As of now all hazardous materials have been cleaned up and removed. The rest of the park is open," town officials said.
Anyone with information about any suspicious activity on Saturday night or anyone who knows someone with new burns on their hands, arms, or clothes is asked to call Longmeadow Police.
