BOSTON (AP/WBZ-AM) -- Massachusetts's governor wants a judge he nominated pulled from criminal cases amid a federal investigation into whether she helped a man in the country illegally evade immigration officials.

Republican Gov. Charlie Baker said Monday that District Court Judge Shelley Joseph should be pulled from criminal cases until the probe is complete. He called the story "troubling."

"Judges are not supposed to be in the business of obstructing justice," Gov. Baker told WBZ NewsRadio. "As far as I can tell, based on the facts as they were presented, she clearly violated the court's own policies with respect to the way they're supposed to handle detainers that involve federal immigration enforcement."

The Boston Globe reported Sunday a grand jury is weighing whether Joseph and other officials broke the law in helping a Dominican man leave the court after an April hearing.
