BOSTON (State House News Service) — A surge of interest in Powerball propelled last month's Massachusetts Lottery sales more than $40 million above the same period a year earlier, narrowing the gap produced by a sluggish stretch, officials said Tuesday.
The agency sold $58.6 million in Powerball products in November, a month when the jackpot for that game soared to a record of more than $2 billion. Those sales reflect a more than sixfold increase over the $9.8 million in Powerball sales the Massachusetts Lottery reported in November 2021, according to figures Interim Executive Director Mark William Bracken presented at a Tuesday commission meeting.

Year-to-date Lottery sales through Dec. 3 stood at $2.55 billion, which is about $11.6 million less than at the same point in fiscal year 2022.
The gap has been closing in recent months, fueled in large part by huge jackpots that have attracted swaths of players. Through the first four months of fiscal year 2023, Lottery sales were down $52.3 million compared to the same stretch in fiscal year 2022, and November alone cut that gap by more than $40 million.
