BRAINTREE Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — Some Braintree parents, teachers, and students are opposed to the town’s plans to make up an $8 million school budget deficit during the next fiscal year. During a school committee meeting on Monday night, some of the plans that the town discussed included eliminating critical special education programs, which many students and parents say is support that can’t be measured.
“This is not at all shocking to me because this is why we chose Braintree to raise our family,” said a parent fighting back tears.
Many fear that once some of these cuts are made, it would be very difficult to restore them.

“It would be devastating to the school system and to the brand of Braintree in [not only] the South Shore, but in Massachusetts [as well],” added another parent.
The town is also considering a tax override vote to help cover the deficit, but there’s no guarantee that it would pass if the initiative was voted on.
