BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — After months of delays, the demolition of the Government Center parking garage is now underway once again.

As demolition resumes in the area, both Merrimack and Congress streets are closing down to drivers because both run under the garage. Nearby Sudbury Street is now running two ways as a detour. The streets will be closed through labor day.

Demolition began on the garage back in March, as developers plan to build new apartments in the location, but had to be stopped after the death of a construction worker on the site. Falling debris from the site also closed Green and Orange Line service in the area for several days.

WBZ's Karyn Regal spoke with a nearby pedestrian named Janey who said she didn't think the work was too disruptive for her.

"I can imagine it would be tougher if you're driving, especially if you're driving on your own," she said. "It helps that all the pedestrian signals are working and all that stuff."
