HOLLISTON, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) – Strangers from across the country are stepping up to support a Massachusetts family who nearly lost it all.

Bob and Edna Touchette of Holliston have touched the lives of many. The couple has fostered hundreds of children over the past 50 years. Cassinda Scharff is their granddaughter and said her grandparents have always made room for others.

“My grandparents didn’t have a lot and they always found a way to give.”

The couple adopted eight of the children they fostered and have four biological children of their own, including Scharff’s mother. Everyone considers Bob and Edna’s home as the hub of the family.

“You were never alone and you were never short of companionship and love and support,” Scharff said.

Unfortunately, a fire took down the family’s home, along with many years of memories, on Monday morning. Thankfully, everyone made it out safely.

Since then, Scharff and her best friend Kim have set up a GoFundMe that has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the family.

“People everywhere just want to come out and help them and it’s about time that they got the help they gave out." In addition, Scharff wants people to take a bigger message away from her family’s experience.

“Call the people that you love and tell them that you love them because we almost didn’t get the opportunity," she said.

As of Wednesday evening, the GoFundMe had raised over $150,000. Its goal is to raise $250,000.
