BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Bostonians wave goodbye to thousands of baseballs, as the Boston Red Sox celebrate Truck Day.
For decades, Red Sox fans have gathered on Van Ness Street for Truck Day, watching the team’s equipment truck get loaded with everything they will need for Spring Training. Milford’s Al Hartz is behind the wheel for the 28th straight time, driving the truck 1480 miles down to Fort Myers, Fla., with a stop at Worcester’s Polar Park Monday afternoon.
“It symbolizes the start of spring,” said one fan.

The Red Sox started loading the truck at 7:00 a.m., which included over 20,000 baseballs, 1,100 bats and 60 cases of sunflower seeds. The excitement was high for fans in attendance Monday morning, but they hope the team improves on the mistakes from last season.
“There’s always moves to be made. I’m not sure exactly what they’re going to [do] next, but there’s always another move,” said one fan.
“I hope they do [well] this season, unlike last year,” said another fan.
The Red Sox's first Spring Training game takes place on Feb. 21.
