PLYMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — It looks like what was once a quiet Plymouth Harbor may be a place of hustle and bustle as soon as this summer when the town plans to open its harbor to more cruise line ships. While this move will bring more tourism dollars into the coastal town, there are concerns that it may have negative impacts on the commercial fishing industry. Plymouth residents are also concerned that the arrival of cruise ships in what is already a small Plymouth Harbor may have effects on the town’s heritage industry.

“Depending on the [size] of the boat [that docks here] they may draft differently,” said Tom, a longtime Plymouth resident.

The town is receiving $3000 per stop from American Cruise Lines which has added Plymouth to its list of stops. It is expected that the local economy in Plymouth will benefit from this too as tourists will visit the local shops and restaurants once they dock. While Plymouth is a community that is constantly growing, those who depend on the commercial fishing industry as a primary source of income are battling to ensure that both industries can successfully coexist without problems.
