BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Massachusetts is home to plenty of haunted happenings, but which city in the Bay State has the most ghost sightings?

A new study from BetMassachusetts took a look at data from Ghosts Of America, a site that tracks ghost sightings, and found that Lowell is the city in Massachusetts with the most Ghost sightings with 59. New Bedford and North Attleboro came in second and third with 54 and 23 sightings respectively.

The study lists some of the most haunted places in Lowell as the old Boott Cotton Mill, the Lowell Cemetery, and several schools in the city. Despite being known as the Witch City, Salem did not make the top 10. Fall River, which is home to the Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast, also failed to crack the top 10.

WBZ's James Rojas spoke with some folks in Boston who were surprised that Salem didn't make the list.

"Salem is known for the witch trials so I'm surprised it wasn't at the top," one person said.

As far as ghostly encounters go, some people had their own tall tales to tell.

"I used to get sleep paralysis," one person said. "When I was younger I used to see a shadowy figure standing in the corner of my room. At the time it was pretty scary."

However, some of the paranormal encounters had some pretty normal explanations.

"I thought there was a ghost in my house but I was wrong," another person said. "Something kept opening and closing my door, but it was just my dog."

WBZ's James Rojas (@JamesRojasNews) reports.
